Garbine Muguruza v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

Muguruza leads 2-1 in the head-to-head, but it is pertinent to note that the pair have not played each other since the 2017 French Open.

Muguruza Edges Martincova In Three

Garbine Muguruza had a tough assignment on her Moscow debut. She rallied from behind and eventually came through 6-4 4-6 6-3 in one of the longest matches of the season that was 15 minutes shy of three hours.

The Spaniard was playing in her first indoor event in nearly three years, and as we predicted, Martincova was certainly good for her money and took a set off the World No. 5.

Muguruza had actually trailed the Czech in that opening set, going down 4-1 as she tried to acclimatize to the court conditions.

The seventh game of that set proved crucial in the grand scheme of things. Martincova appeared home and dry to hold for a 5-2 lead when she led 40-0 on serve. But suddenly she was dragged down and Muguruza turned her errors into winners and eventually drew a clumsy volley mistake to break back.  Martincova ceded the set after being broken in her subsequent game too.

The Czech responded by taking the second set, but it only proved to be a minor blip in the Muguruza gameplan. The nine-time WTA titlist went on to claim the third by securing three breaks.

Kontaveit Getting Better and Better

If Muguruza struggled in her opening match, the same cannot be said of Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian has been in red-hot form in the second half of 2021 and a return to the world’s top 20 has finally done her accomplishments enough justice.

Kontaveit took down the seemingly off-color but always dangerous Katerina Siniakova in the first round, and then proceeded to defeat Andrea Petkovic on Thursday afternoon. She dropped just five games against the German veteran in a comfortable second-round match.

It was some sort of respite for the World No. 20 whose firepower proved too much to handle for Petkovic. The 34-year-old’s game couldn’t quite match up for too long. Kontaveit only needed 69 minutes to polish up a fine display of power tennis.

The Estonian hammered five aces and won 77% of first-serve points. She also converted seven breakpoints to round off a straight-set victory.

Muguruza v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit has won 18 of her past 20 matches and confidence is at an all-time high. The Estonian has hit a purple patch and we reckon she will overcome the second seed.
