Alison Riske v Ankita Raina Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 31-year old American, and the Indian, who is three years younger.

Riske’s Prolonged Spell of Poor Form

Two years ago, Riske was a top 20 player. She had just won the second title of her senior career at Rosmalen and went on to reach the quarter-final of Wimbledon, and was the beaten finalist in the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan.

But then the global pandemic occurred and she has not been the same player since. Of the last 21 tournaments she has entered, only once has she won more than a single match.

The outlier to that came in Portoroz, Slovenia, a month ago, when she got to the final – admittedly not against the strongest field – before losing to the Italian Jasmine Paolini.

Since then though she has reverted to type, losing in the second round in Ostrava, and Indian Wells, and, last week in Tenerife, suffering a first round defeat at the hands of the Croat Donna Vekic.

Lucky Loser Raina

Raina had gone more than two months without a win since losing in a Challenger event in August.

She entered the qualifying tournament in Italy, but, having beaten Rosalie Van der Hoek of the Netherlands easily in the first round of that, she was then beaten by local woman Marina Di Giuseppi, the world number 288.

Fortunately for her, she was then picked out of the hat as a lucky loser and got to take her place in the main draw.

Not that she has much history at this level. She has only won one senior tour match before, and that was back at the Phillip Island Trophy back in Melbourne in February.

She has played seven and lost seven in matches against top 50 players, so beating Riske would be the biggest victory of her career.

Riske v Raina Prediction and Tip

Riske may be in a prolonged spell of poor form but it would still be a major upset if Raina were to beat her.
