Kaja Juvan v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

The upcoming meeting in the Transylvania Open will be their second encounter on the WTA Tour. The pair met earlier in the WTA Belgrade Challenger where Cristian trumped Juvan with 6-3, 7-6(2).

Juvan, A Doubles Winner here in August

World No. 98 Kaja Juvan played in Cluj-Napoca back in August under the tournament name Winners Open. As a singles player, she went as far as the second round before succumbing to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. In the doubles discipline, she went the distance with Natela Dzalamidze to win her maiden WTA title of any sort.

The 20-year-old is back in the town once again a few months later, set to feature in similar conditions. Between then and now, Juvan’s form on the WTA singles circuit has been largely underwhelming, except for a semifinal stint in the Portoroz Open.

At her home tournament, she beat the likes of Petra Martic and Tamara Zidansek to post one of her best results on the tour this year. However, the Slovenian failed to carry that form forward to Astana and Tenerife, losing in the early rounds.

Looking at Juvan’s overall season, it has been uneventful to a great deal. Her sole highlights came in the Australian Open and Wimbledon where she reached round three – as a qualifier in the former.

With a win-loss tally of 20-19, it suffices to say that she lacks consistency but finds herself in a good position to make up for it with a match against Cristian.

Cristian, Capable of Surprises

Jaqueline Cristian may be the 105th ranked player at the moment on the WTA Tour but it is worth noting that at the start of the season, she was ranked in the late 160s.

The 23-year-old has worked hard this season to deliver results and build her form although, that hasn’t translated into any significant trophies. Her sole silverware of the season came in an ITF $60,000 event in France where she was the runner-up.

Cristian has since played a lot of tennis across Challenger, WTA, and ITF circuits to up her game. Her best results came in Astana, Palermo, and St. Petersburg where she reached the latter rounds. Apart from this, the Romanian has incurred losses in the opening stages of the tournaments she has featured in.

Most recently, Cristian played in the Tenerife Ladies Open where she was stopped in her tracks by Schmiedlova in round two.

Juvan v Cristian Prediction and Tip

This is a match that can go either way. Both players have had a bleak season but Cristian has a slightly superior pedigree and home advantage. Expect three sets in the match where Cristian has a marginally better chance of reaching round two.
