Roberto Bautista Agut v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

Bautista Agut won the pair’s only meeting in the series in three sets at the 2018 Shanghai Masters.

Spaniard Fell To Surprise Loss In Antwerp

Roberto Bautista Agut fell to a surprise defeat in the second round of Antwerp a week ago at the hands of Marton Fucsovics. It was a second successive three-set defeat for the former World No. 9 who also fell to Cameron Norrie in Indian Wells. He has certainly lost some mojo from his decent start to the year.

The Spaniard could be overtaken in the ATP Race as he looks to achieve a Top-20 year-end ranking for yet another season. Things however, haven’t quite gone as planned in recent weeks. The 33-year-old has notched one win from his past four matches.

But the form table shows he cannot be underestimated indoors. Bautista Agut reached the final in Montpellier at the end of February and was extremely unluckly to finish on the losing side.

Bautista Agut has played the St. Petersburg Open six times in the past and he has a fine record at the event despite not winning it. He has reached the semifinals in each of his last four appearances and makes his first visit since 2018.

McDonald Brushes Aside Egor Gerasimov

Mackenzie McDonald showed tremendous guile and effort to defeat Egor Gerasimov on Tuesday. The 26-year-old recorded a 7-5 6-4 victory in 86 minutes.

Gerasimov has had better serving days and certainly on indoor hard courts where he is a natural threat. But instead, the Belarusian accounted for six double faults, and averaged 65% first serves in, and won 40% second-serve points. In contrast, McDonald whose serve is not a lethal weapon in his arsenal edged out the serving numbers.

The American overcame a period of inertia in the first set when both players exchanged breaks twice, and steadied the ship towards a tight 7-5 lead. In the second set, he earned a crucial break in the seventh game, and needed three match points to close out a straight-set win.

McDonald improves to 9-3 on indoor hard courts. He has one title to show for his progress, which was captured at the Nur-Sultan Challenger in February.

Bautista Agut v McDonald Prediction and Tip

McDonald has made the long climb from his injury hell and has established himself as a dangerous floater in the past 18 months. Although consistency is not his best asset, he does have a knack for frustrating some of the top players in the game. This should be no different.
