Anhelina Kalinina kickstarted her journey in the Transylvania Open with a remarkable, 6-1, 6-1 win over Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove. The match lasted for just an hour and saw the Ukrainian win 77 percent of the points behind her first serve and save four out of five breakpoints.
Currently ranked World No. 59 – just two places shy of her career-best singles ranking – it has been a defining season for the 24-year-old, to say the least.
She arrived in Cluj-Napoca with an impressive record of 39-13. Kalinina has won four ITF titles this season, two of which came back to back in Montpellier and Contrexeville in July. She immediately built on this with a runner-up feat in the Hungarian Grand Prix, thus reaching her first singles final on the WTA Tour.
Since then, however, Kalinina has lost in the opening rounds of the Chicago Open, US Open, WTA Portoroz, and Indian Wells Open.

Friedsam Survives Ignatik Slogfest
Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany had to work hard in her opening round bout against the World No. 209, Romania’s Alexandra Ignatik. The match lasted for almost three hours and saw Friedsam take the win with 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The fact that the 27-year-old was made to put in this much effort against a player ranked some 70 odd places below her tells us all there is know about her recent form.
Friedsam’s run on the tour has been largely uneventful of late as she incurred a bunch of losses in the opening/qualifying rounds. Her best run in the recent weeks came in the Astana Open where she reached the second round.
Such has been the case for her throughout the season, which is also one of the factors why she has dropped to mid 130s in the ranking after starting the year in the early 100s.
Kalinina v Friedsam Prediction and Tip
Kalinina has form and momentum on her side. More importantly, she finds herself with a good opportunity to build on it further by moving past the German.
Expect a one-sided affair where the Ukrainian should do well to reach the next round.
