Marton Fucsovics v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

Fucsovics and Fognini have been involved in as many as four career head-to-head meetings till date, with the latter holding a clear 3-1 lead over the former. Their last meeting came in the second round of this year’s French Open which saw the Italian winning in straight sets.

Fucsovics Looks for Light at the End of  Tunnel

Since becoming the toast of Hungary with a sizzling quarter-final finish at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, the first from his country to get that far in a Grand Slam event, Fucsovics has quite literally gone off the boil.

Barring the European Open in Antwerp where he raised visions of lifting his second career title  before his campaign was cut short in the last eight, the Hungarian has struggled to get himself into the second round of events.

After falling in the opening round at the Cincinnati Masters and the second at Winston-Salem, 39th-ranked Fucsovics  crashed to an agonizing five-set defeat to Italian Andreas Seppi in the first round of US Open.

Coming to Antwerp on the back of three successive first-round losses at the Moselle Open, San Diego and the Indian Wells Masters, he looked to have finally found a revival road. He got himself into the quarter-finals with contrasting wins over Austrian Dennis Novak and seasoned Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.

However, a straight-set defeat to rising South African star Lloyd Harris in the quarter-finals saw his title hopes go up in smoke. Failing to rise from the disappointment in Belgium, he suffered another opening-round defeat to  reigning Indian Wells champion an new British No.1 Cameron Norrie.

Though he has another shot at revival and redemption at the Paris Masters, has has to navigate a daunting draw which will see him start against veteran Italian star Fabio Fognini.

His task of going past the Italian in the first round has been rendered doubly difficult by the fact that he trails his opponent 1-3 on the head-to-head score. However, his fans would hope that the unflattering head-to-head history will motivate him to push for a win over the Italian this time.

Fognini Eyeing a Turnaround

It has been a season of what-ifs for Fognini as far too often he put himself in positions from where he could push for titles but ended u someway short of where he had hoped to be.

His inconsistency and inability to sustain his levels through the course of a tournament hurt his tittle prospects, leaving him with as many wins as defeats and not a single championship trophy to come away with.

His last Tour event,  the Vienna Open, ended in an ignominious fist-round defeat to current World No.16 Argentine Diego Schwartzman. Currently ranked 36th in singles, the Italian fell off the pace early in the piece, going down 2-6 in the opening set.

He couldn’t make a recovery thereafter as the pocket-sized Argentine seized on the initiative and momentum to close out a comfortable 6-2, 7-5 win.

With not many events left for Fognini to haul his faltering season back on the rails, he has to set his hopes of silverware at the Paris Masters. However, he faces a tricky first-round opponent in this year’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist Marton Fucsovics.

Although the Hungarian has not been on a winning run himself after the heroics at All England, he does have the ability to raise his game at marquee events such as the Paris Masters.

However, the 3-1 career head-to-head lead that Fognini holds over the Hungarian will stand him in good stead as bids to get off to a winning start in the tournament on Monday.

Fucsovics v Fognini Prediction and Tip

With Fognini’s form the way it has been, it will be down to Fucsovics to lose this one. Expecting an easy victory for the Hungarian.
