Jan-Lennard Struff v Tommy Paul Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Parma earlier this year, on Paul’s favourite surface of clay. The American won in straight sets.

St. Petersburg Semi-Finalist Struff

Struff has just come from St. Petersburg where he reached the semi-finals and was a set up on Taylor Fritz only to lose to the American in the end.

It was his latest attempt to win a senior ATP final to end in failure, although he did reach the final in Munich back in May on home soil.

His record though in Masters events is not good – the best he has managed is a quarter-final in Cincinnati last year. To add to that, the German has twice made the third round in Paris in previous years but never gone beyond that.

Can he turn things around in this Paris Masters opener?

Paul, Top Seed in the Qualifying Competition

Paul’s performance in Parma, where he reached the semi-finals, was his best result of the year and enabled him to break into the top 50, although he has drifted several places since then.

He made his Olympics debut in July, but then was beaten in the first round by Aslan Karatsev.

More recently, he competed in St. Petersburg last week, where he weas beaten by a familiar foe form his Junior Grand Slam days in the shape of compatriot Taylor Fitz.

He was made to work hard for his place in the main draw, despite being ranked top seed in the qualifying competition, first beating Stefano Travaglia of Italy in three sets, before going on to meet the Australian Alexei Popyrin.

It was Popyrin who started the stronger, taking the opening set, but the American steadied the ship, levelled, and then, despite having five match points saved in the third set, he converted the sixth.

Struff v Paul Prediction and Tip

Although Paul won their previous match, Struff is the more experienced player, and has better for on indoor hard courts.
