Monfils Comes from Behind in Front of French Crowd

Monfils, who won the title in Paris in 2016, was made to work hard for his passage to the second round by Miomir Kecmanovic, the world number 69, despite serving 14 aces in their match on Tuesday.

In fact, when he was broken early in the first set and then Kecmanovic went on to claim the set, the French crowd were worried that one of their local favourites was heading for an early exit from the event.

And, with the second set seemingly heading for a tie-break, nothing was guaranteed. However, just at the right moment, with Kecmanovic serving to stay in the set, Monfils forced a break point which he subsequently converted.

Both men had to save break points early in the third set, but it was Kecmanovic who finally cracked and dropped his serve.

Monfils only conceded one point on ins serve then as he delighted the local fans by closing out the match.

Mannarino Impresses Against Basilashvili

It has been largely a season to forget for Mannarino, but he gave the French crowd something to cheer about with an impressive win over Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, the world number 21, in the first round on Monday night.

Mannarino struck first, breaking the Georgian in the third game of the match, and though he immediately dropped his own serve, two more successive breaks were enough for him to clinch the first set.

Basilashvili looked like he might be ready to fight his way back into the match when he broke Mannarino midway through the second set, but the Frenchman levelled straight away and then put himself in the driving seat with a further break.

Serving for the match, Mannarino saved three break points, but then sealed the win with his second match point.
