Alison Riske v Alize Cornet Head to Head

Riske has a 5-0 record against Cornet. What’s more, she has never lost a set against the Frenchwoman.

Riske Breezes Past Barthel

World No. 73 Alison Riske made a brisk start on Sunday, as she breezed past Germany’s Mona Barthel in straight sets in the first round.

Riske converted six of 12 break points and saved five of seven as she defeated the German 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and nine minutes.

Playing in Linz for the first time, the American will be desperate to win Tuesday’s match and reach a second quarterfinal in what’s been a disappointing season for her. The former World No. 18 was 11-16 before the start of the tournament and had reached the last eight just once in Slovenia two months ago, where she went all the way to the final but couldn’t win a third career title falling to Jasmine Paolini.

That was also the only tournament this year when Riske won two matches in a row. She has failed to win two consecutive matches on all the other occasions and is 4-4 from her last eight matches.

A solid hard court player, Riske has dominated her rivalry against Cornet and will look to extend her dominance on Tuesday.

Cornet Gets Hard-Fought Win Over Local Hope

World No. 59 Alize Cornet was expected to make a quick work of World No. 194 Julia Grabher in the first round, instead she had to slog it out for over two hours before edging past the spirited Austrian.

Cornet went 2-0 up in the first set, but lost the next four games to find herself 2-4 down. However, she got another break in the eighth game to draw level. The set eventually needed a tiebreak, which was a real close affair with the Frenchwoman saving two set points before eventually sealing it 9-7.

Cornet got off to a flying start in the second set, racing to a 5-2 lead, but couldn’t convert two match points as Grabher attempted a comeback. The former No. 11 eventually held on for a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 victory.

Cornet had come into the tournament with a 26-26 record in 2021. She was a semifinalist in her last tournament in Tenerife and will be hoping to reach a fifth quarterfinal of the season on Tuesday.

Riske v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Given Riske’s dominance over Cornet, she will start the favourite, but the latter has displayed better form this season and will hope to get a first win over the American. Expect a tight contest with Riske extending her perfect run over the Frenchwoman.
