Pedro Martinez v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24-year old Spaniard, and the American, who is a year younger.

Martinez Pushed All the Way by the Finn

Martinez, whose best results of the year have tended to come on clay, including finishing runner-up in Kitzbuhel, seemed to be in control of his match with Emil Ruusuvouri of Finland, the world number 82, on Tuesday.

He had begun the match by breaking the Finn in his two opening service game and, although he surrendered one of those breaks, he took the first set with ease.

And when he broke Ruusuvouri early in the second set, he must have been dreaming about getting back to the locker room to start preparing for his next match.

The Finn, though, had other ideas, broke back to level, and then broke once more to take the match into a third set.

That went with serve, until Martinez on serve had a match point. Ruusuvouri saved that and he match was decided on a tie-break.

The Spaniard fashioned another match point, and this time he took it.

Tiafoe Ends Local Favourite’s Hopes

Tiafoe reached his second senior final of the season in Vienna, with a run that included victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas, Diego Schwartzman and Jannik Sinner, before he was eventually beaten by Alexander Zverev.

Although he subsequently lost in the first round of the Paris Masters last week, defeated in three sets by compatriot Marcos Giron, he began the favourite in his first round match with the Swedish number two, Elias Ymer, in Stockholm.

The American began well, breaking the Swede in the opening games of the match, and was able to consolidate his advantage to take the set.

The second set though was less predictable. After the pair swapped service breaks, Tiafoe went a break down only to level immediately. The Swede then had five break points, saw all of them saved, and it meant a tie-break was needed to resolve matters,

The American was faultless on serve, Ymer was not, and that ultimately proved to be the difference.

Tiafoe v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Martinez was made to work much harder than expected for his place in the second round, whereas Tiafoe was able to cruise through his match. At this late stage of the season , the extra energy the Spaniard expended could make a significant difference.
