Simona Halep v Jasmine Paolini Head to Head

Halep was the winner in their one and only encounter on the WTA Tour. The meeting took place in the 2020 Rome Masters where the Romanian won in straight sets.

Halep Starts Strong

World No. 22 Simona Halep, starting with a bye into the second round at Linz Open, defeated Belarus’s Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinal. While it wasn’t the most clinical performance from the former world number one, it was still good enough to get the job done in an hour and 40 minutes.

Halep won 70 percent of the points behind the first service while converting four breakpoints in the process.

Following the exit of Emma Raducanu on Tuesday evening, this tournament is effectively Halep’s to lose now.

The 30-year-old has had a season mired with injuries and subsequent form woes. After missing much of clay and the entirety of grass swing, she returned to the fray only in the US Open Series and has since gradually spent her time rebuilding her momentum.

Halep has gotten progressively better – most recently, she featured in the Transylvania Open where she lost in the final to Anett Kontaveit.

Paolini Survives Another Three Setter

Jasmine Paolini, seeded seventh for the competition in Linz, moved past Saisai Zheng in the second round in a little under two hours. The Italian won with 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, on the back of a 73 percent first service win rate.

This marks a second three-setter for Paolini here, with the first one coming against Dayana Yastremska in the opener with 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

The 25-year-old is currently ranked World No. 51 – her best singles ranking yet – and arrived in Linz with a tally of 32-23. She has certainly played a whole lot of tennis in 2021 and among her highlights are title runs in the Slovenia Open and Bol Challenger, and a runner-up feat in the 125K Saint-Malo.

In the recent weeks, she reached the third round in the Indian Wells Open as a qualifier and followed it with a semifinal feat in the Courmayeur Open. Paolini has a fair bit of form and momentum on her side, to say the least.

Halep v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Halep will start as the odds-on favourite but given the kind of tennis Paolini is playing right now, it may not be an easy win. Expect an intriguing match.
