Lorenzo Musetti v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between Musetti, who is 19 years old, and Gaston, who is two years older.

Musetti Makes Disappointing Start

Musetti is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jannik Sinner by winning this event in Italian soil but he had been struggling with form coming into the tournament and that carried over into his match with the world number 111, Sebastian Baez, the South American clay court specialist.

The Italian began badly, dropping his opening service game and another dropped serve handed the first set to Baez.

The Italian continued to have problems holding his serve, and it was no surprise when he was broken once more, allowing Baez to extend his lead.

The third set was closer and went to a tie-break, which Musetti eventually won.

At that stage, the local crowd were hoping for a comeback and Musetti briefly raised expectations when he forced a break point in the fourth set. He could not take it; however, it went to another tie-break, and this time Baez claimed it and the match.

Gaston Misses His Chance in Milan

Gaston was the last man to book his place in Milan, but he arrived in Italy in confident mood after his surprise run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters last week, and initially carried that form into his match with the number two seed,  and world number 39, Sebastian Korda.

The match did not begin well for Gaston – he was broken in the opening game of the match, but he soon levelled and, in the resultant tie-break, he proved to be the more consistent player.

Both players had break opportunities in the second set, but were unable to take them, resulting in another tie-break, which Gaston also won.

He was in a very strong position at that stage, but the American regrouped and took the third set to love.

The fourth set was close and, with no break points created on either side of the net it went to another tie-break which Korda claimed.

At that point, something of the fight drained out of the Frenchman, and he was not to win another game as Korda swept through the fifth set.

Musetti v Gaston Prediction and Tip

This is a must-win match for both men if they want to entertain hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the tournament, Musetti is the home favourite, but Gaston is in the better form and that gives him the clear edge.
