Murray Stuns Top Seeded Sinner

Andy Murray stunned top seed Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 of the Stockholm Open on Wednesday to march into the second tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

In an engaging contest, neither player was broken in the first set, with Murray eventually taking the 75-minute set in the tiebreak. The three-time Grand Slam champion saved the only break point that he faced in the first set. He didn’t face a single break point in the second, however, broke the Italian twice to take the two-hour-and-16-minute contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

The victory over the World No. 10 was Murray’s second over a top 10 player this year. He had earlier beaten Hubert Hurkacz in the first round in Vienna.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist had begun his Stockholm campaign with a 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) win over Norwegian qualifier Viktor Durasovic.

In September, Murray had also reached the last eight in Metz, but was stopped from reaching the semifinals by Hurkacz.

Wednesday’s victory means Murray is now 15-13 for the season and on Thursday, he will be aiming to reach a first semifinal since Antwerp 2019. He had gone on to win his 46th career title in Antwerp two years ago, but has not made a final four appearance since then.
