Baez Goes Down to Korda in Three

Sixth seed Sebastian Baez, who defeated third seed Lorenzo Musetti 4-1, 4-1, 3-4 (5-7), 4-3 (7-5) in the first match, lost to second seed Sebastian Korda 3-4 (3-7), 2-4, 2-4 in the second match on Monday. As a result, the 20-year-old Argentine, ranked 111th in the world, is placed in the second position in Group B.

The group is, however, still open, with each of the four in contention for a place in the semifinals.

For Baez to qualify, he will first have to win his match on Thursday and then wait for the result in the second match. A straight sets win over Gaston will more or less assure him of a place in the semifinals.

He can even top the the group, if he beats Gaston in three and Musetti defeats Korda in three or four sets.

Things will become interesting if Musetti defeats Korda. A five-set win for the Italian and a victory for Baez, will mean that Korda will win the group and Baez will qualify as No. 2. But if Musetti defeats Korda in three sets and Baez defeats Gaston in four or five, then it will be Musetti, who will win the group and Korda will qualify as No. 2.

If Musetti defeats Korda in four and Baez defeats Gaston in four or five sets, Korda will win the group and Baez will qualify as No. 2. A win for Korda and Baez, will assure them a 1-2 finish in the group.

Gaston Loses Another Five-Setter

So close yet so far. that’s been the case with Hugo Gaston at the Next Gen Finals.

He squandered a two-set-to-love lead in the first match against Korda, and then overturned a two-set deficit in the second match against Musetti on Wednesday yet couldn’t complete the turnaround, going down in five for the second consecutive day.

While Korda defeated the Frenchman 3-4 (2-7), 3-4 (6-8), 4-0, 4-3 (7-3), 4-0 on day 1, Musetti beat Gaston 4-3 (7-4), 4-3 (8-6), 2-4, 3-4 (7-9), 4-2 in two hours and 34 minutes.

Ranked 67th in the world, the 21-year-old left-hander can now qualify only if he beats Baez and then Korda beats Musetti. Any other result and he will be knocked out of the tournament.

Baez v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Gaston will be bracing for another long battle. Eventually Baez should win this contest and qualify in the No. 2 spot behind Korda from Group B.
