Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed in the tournament and he has played like one in the round robin phase.

The 18-year-old Spaniard started the tournament with a 4-3 (8-6), 4-2, 4-0 win over Denmark’s Holger Rune and then scored another three set win in the next match against Brandon Nakashima, beating the American 4-3 (7-4), 4-1, 4-3 (7-4).

He went into the final match of the group phase already assured of a semifinal place, and made it three out of three by beating Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo 4-0, 4-1, 2-4, 4-3 (7-3) on Thursday.

With the win, Alcaraz improved to 30-17 in what has been a stunning season for the Spaniard, who won his maiden tour-level title in Umag.

Against Cerundolo on Thursday, Alcaraz saved 9 of 10 break points and converted 3 of 5. He struck 23 winners against 6 from the Argentine and made 19 unforced errors, six more than his opponent.

Baez Knocks Out Gaston to Qualify

Playing his first ATP main draw tournament on hard courts, Sebastian Baez made it to the semifinals of the tournament with a straight sets win over Hugo Gaston in a do or die final group encounter on Thursday.

Baez converted 4 of 12 break points and saved 1 of 3 to win the one-hour-and-five-minute contest 4-3 (7-3), 4-2, 4-2.

The 20-year-old Argentine had begun the tournament with a 4-1, 4-1, 3-4 (5-7), 4-3 (7-5) victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, but lost the second match to Sebastian Korda 4-3 (7-3), 4-2, 4-2. He needed a victory in the last match over Gaston, who had stretched both the other players to five sets before going down in the first two matches. The world no. 111 eventually got the win and finished second in Group B, behind Korda.
