Schwartzman Is 2-4 In ATP Cup

He doesn’t have a great record at the ATP Cup, but with national pride at stake, Diego Schwartzman will be raring to go at the season-opening ATP Cup.

The Argentine has a 2-4 record from his previous two appearances, with the wins coming over Borna Coric and Kei Nishikori in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Argentina made it to the quarterfinals in 2020 but couldn’t make the knockout stages in 2021.

Schwartzman, who broke into the top 10 for the first time in 2020 and peaked to a career-high ranking of No. 8, remained in the top 10 till May 2021, before slipping down the rankings. Currently ranked No. 13th in the world, he is coming off a 38-23 season, which included a title on clay in Buenos Aires in March. He came very close to winning another later in the season, but finishes runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Antwerp.

A winner of four ATP titles from 12 finals, Schwartzman has a winning record on both clay and hard surfaces. He was 24-14 on hard courts last season and has a 104-85 career record on the surface.

The 5’7″ right-hander, known for his speed and agility, will be keen to start the new year on a winning note.

Basilashvili Coming Off a Solid Season

Nikoloz Basilashvili will be featuring in the ATP Cup for the second time. In his first appearance in 2020, he lost his first two Group matches, but ended on a high with a win over Pablo Cuevas in his last singles match.

The Georgian, who had a forgettable 2020, turned things around in 2021, finishing the season with a 33-27 record, which included two titles and a first Masters 1000 final.

A five-time winner on the Tour, Basilashvili captured the crown in Doha for his second career hard court title and a first in 2021. He then went on to add a third clay title by winning in Munich.

In October, he reached a maiden Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells, but fell to Cameron Norrie in three.

Basilashvili, who started the 2021 season as World No. 40, is beginning the 2022 season as World No. 22, a result of some big results last season, which included wins over Roger Federer in the quarterfinals in Doha and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight at Indian Wells.

The 29-year-old had a much better season on hard courts last year, finishing with a 21-16 record and improving his career hard court record to 80-81. He will be looking to build on that this season.
