He was sensational in 2021 and has had an impressive start to the new year as well. Norway’s Casper Ruud defeated Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic in straight sets in a Group A match on Saturday. However, Norway lost the No. 2 singles, and Ruud, along with partner Viktor Durasovic, went down to the Serbian pair of Nikola Cacic and Filip Krajinovic to lose the tie 2-1.

Ruud was impressive in his singles match, getting the only break of the first set to claim it 6-3. He faced strong resistance from the Serb in the second set, who came back from a break down twice, but eventually fell to the 23-year-old 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 41 minutes.

Currently occupying a career-high ranking of No. 8, Ruud is coming off a 57-17 season, which saw him clinch four clay titles in Geneva, Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and one hard court title in San Diego.

A solid clay court player, Ruud impressed with his consistency on hard courts last season, finishing with a 27-10 record on the surface, and that included a run to the semifinals of the ATP Finals. He will be hoping to build on that success this year at the ATP Cup, where he had a 2-1 record in his only appearance in 2020.
