Tommy Paul v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on clay of Parma last year, Paul winning their second-round match in three sets.

As a junior, Paul was one of the top ranked players in the world, winning the French Open in 2015 and finishing runner-up at the US Open, both matches against his friend and rival Taylor Fritz.

However, until last year, he had struggled to replicate that sort of form and level of success to the senior tour.

Although that began to change after he reached the semi-final in Parma in May on clay, his preferred surface, and then reached the second round of Roland Garros, enabling him to break into the top 50 for the first time.

On the strength of that he was chosen to represent his country at the Tokyo Olympics.

Then at Indian Wells he recorded one of the biggest wins of his career by beating world number five Andrey Rublev, before he rounded off the year by winning his first senior title at the Stockholm Open beating Denis Shapovalov in the final.

Paul will be looking to build on that momentum ion the New Year.

Can Vesely Find Some Form Again?

Vesely is the current number one Czech player, although at a time when men’s tennis is not enjoying the same success as previous years in the country.

He reached a career high of 35 in the world three years ago. And has appeared in three ATP finals, winning two of them, most recently in Pune two years ago.

Unlike Paul, he had his struggles in 2021, failing to get beyond the second-round stage of any of the Grand Slam events and inly making the main draw once of any of the Masters tournaments.

In fact, in a bid to find some form, he spent the second part of last season primarily on the Challenger tour, winning a title in France in October.

The Czech will be hoping that provides him with the confidence he needs to mount a sustained challenge on the senior tour this year.

Paul will be looking to pick up where he left off in 2021, whilst Vesely will be hoping that the new year bring a chance of fortune. The American is the more likely of the two to have his wish fulfilled.
