Veronika Kudermetova v Viktoria Kuzmova Head to Head

Kudermetova and Kuzmova have contested just one WTA match between them. The tall Russian won that one in two tiebreak sets on the clay of Gstaad in 2018.

Kudermetova On The Brink Of Top 30 Return

Veronika Kudermetova punctuated her breakthrough year on the WTA tour with her maiden title in Charleston last season. And following her semifinal run in Istanbul just a few weeks later, her ranking vaulted to a career-high No. 28 last April. The Russian’s form on clay courts came completely out of the blue.

Kudermetova ended the year with a not too shabby record. She went 33-24, not accounting for her results at the Billie Jean King Cup. She played an integral role in the semifinals of that tournament where she teamed up with Liudmila Samsonova to win a decisive doubles rubber against the USA.

That success at the team tournament sealed a fine year for the 24-year-old despite a minor slump in the second half of the campaign. She had gone 14 tournaments without reaching the quarterfinals before stopping the rot in Linz.

The big-serving Russian has plenty of fond memories to draw upon from last season’s start. she reached her first final of the year in Abu Dhabi in the first week of regular tennis. Can she repeat those exploits?

Kuzmova Scales Qualies

Viktoria Kuzmova easily navigated her way into the main draw of WTA tournament for the first time since the Slovenian Open last September.

Kuzmova toppled Magdalena Frech 7-6 6-3 and then got a walkover in her next qualifying match against Olga Govortsova to book a meeting against the power-hitting Kudermetova.

Kuzmova, it should be noted, won 25 matches and peaked at a career-high ranking of No. 43 in 2019. But she had difficulties adjusting to a pandemic-hit year in 2020 where she registered a measly four tour-level wins all year.

The 24-year-old Slovak’s ranking dropped down significantly and starts 2022 outside the top 100. In pale contrast to her doubles career, Kuzmova won a WTA title last season when she teamed up with Arantxa Rus in Lyon.

Kuzmova went on to add to her trophy cabinet at the Dubai ITF 100K last November.
