This will be a first tour-level meeting between the World No. 28 Dimitrov and World No. 76 Bagnis. Dimitrov won their only meeting at a lower level in 2010.

Dimitrov Eyes a Winning Start

Grigor Dimitrov will kickstart his 2022 campaign against Facundo Bagnis in the second round of the Melbourne Summer Set on Thursday. The 30-year-old tends to do well in Australia. He was a semifinalist at the Australian Open in 2017 and a quarterfinalist in 2014, 2018 and 2021.

Seeded third at the Melbourne Summer Set, the Bulgarian received a first-round bye. An eight-time champion on the tour, Dimitrov hasn’t won a title since winning the ATP Finals title in 2017. He has also not reached a final since finishing runner-up in Rotterdam in 2018.

He had a decent start last year, but looked out of sorts on clay before finishing well with runs to the semifinals in San Diego and Indian Wells.

Overall he finished with a 24-18 record and will look to start on a high in Melbourne and set the tone for the season.

Bagnis Battles Past Murray

Facundo Bagnis began his season with a first-round win over Andy Murray.

The Argentine left-hander faced 13 break points in the match but saved 11 of them. In contrast he had six opportunities to break the former No. 1’s serve and he capitalised on four of those occasions to win the two-hour-and-27-minute contest 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Bagnis, who reached a maiden ATP final in Santiago last year, finishing runner-up to Cristian Garin, is coming off an 11-12 season.

A clay-court specialist, the 31-year-old will be encouraged by a rare success on hard court. He had won just three tour-level matches on the surface before his win over Murray on Tuesday.

Dimitrov v Bagnis Prediction and Tip

Bagnis doesn’t have a lot of experience on hard court, while Dimitrov is one of the better players on the surface. The Bulgarian’s experience gives him the edge. He should win this match with ease and advance to the last eight.
