Monfils, who has just announced that he is ending his long partnership with Wilson as his equipment supplier after entering into a new deal with Artengo, is now entering into the veteran stage of his career, although he remains the top ranked French player.

He has won nine career titles, and, although he did not add to that haul in 2021, he did reach the final in Sofia, only to lose to Jannik Sinner.

In fact, after struggling in the first part of last season, he had a much better second d half to his campaign, reaching the quarter-final of the Canadian Masters and the semi-finals in Moselle.

He also became the 11th player to register 500 wins on the senior ATP tour.

Add to that his marriage to long-year partner Elina Svitolina, and it was not a bad year in all for the popular Frenchman. Now he will be looking to start 2022 brightly.

Cerundulo came to prominence in the first partn of 2021, when, together with his older brother Francisco, they became the first siblings to reach back-to-back finals on the ATP tour since 2017. And, whereas Francisco had to settle for the runners-up spot in Buenos Aires,

His performances on clay were enough to end him a place in the season ending NextGen ATP finals for the most promising young players in the world, although he lost all three of his matches in the round robin stage in Milan.

However, he began his 2022 campaign well enough with a comfortable victory over the Australian wildcard Alex Bolt, the world number 137.

The Argentine breezed through the first set, was never threatened on his own serve, whilst he was able to break Bolt twice.

And two breaks of serve early in the second set put him in control of the match. Bolt was able to recover one of those breaks, and had four break points to level things up. However, he could not take them and Cerundulo was able to serve out without too much difficult after that.
