Karen Khachanov v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

Khachanov has a 2-0 record against Gerasimov with his most recent success over the Belarusian coming at the Wimbledon last year.

World No. 29 Karen Khachanov made a good start to the season, winning his second round match at the Adelaide International and sealing a spot in the quarterfinals.

The second seed Russian served 16 aces and hit 39 winners on his way to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over America’s Steve Johnson on Thursday.

The silver medalist at the Olympics last year, Khachanov saved six of eight break points and converted four of five in the two-hour contest. He made as many as 30 unforced errors in the match, seven more than his opponent.

The 25-year-old, who has won four titles in his career, all on hard courts, finished the 2021 season with a 35-24 record, which included a run to the final in Tokyo, where he went down to Alexander Zverev.

He will be aiming to reach a first semifinal since reaching the last four in Moscow in October. He was stopped from reaching the final by Aslan Karatsev.

Qualifier Gerasimov Marches On

Egor Gerasimov reached a first quarterfinal since February last year, defeating Italy’s Gianluca Mager in the second round on Thursday.

Gerasimov dominated the first set, losing just one game before wrapping it up in less than 30 minutes. Mager made a come back in the second though, getting the only break of the set. But Gerasimov regained control in the third, breaking the World No. 62 in the sixth game and ending his run in the tournament with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

Ranked 113th in the world, Gerasimov had upset the fifth seed Márton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

The Belarusian, who was 16-24 last season, had qualified for the main draw by defeating Australia’s Lamchinniah Henry 6-0, 6-1 and Moldova’s Radu Albot 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 in the qualifying rounds.

In his only quarterfinal appearance last year, Gerasimov had beaten Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the final four in Montpellier, but his progress was halted by David Goffin in the semifinals.

Gerasimov has displayed solid form over the last four matches and will be a tough opponent to beat.  Expect the Belarusian to take Khachanov to the decider but eventually the Russian should prevail in the third.
