Rybakina Rebounds To Send Rogers Packing

Elena Rybakina suffered quite a few heartbreaks in close three-setters last year. But things seem to be changing for the Kazakh this year as she registered her second three-set win in only her third match of the year on Friday.

The World No. 14 fought back from a set down to overcome America’s Shelby Rogers in an engaging quarterfinal and march on at the Adelaide International.

Rybakina had five break point chances in Rogers’ first two service games of the match, but the Kazakh couldn’t take any of them allowing Rogers to steady herself. The American converted her only break point of the first set in the fourth game and didn’t allow another break point in the set to take a one-set lead after 40 minutes.

Rybakina found herself in a bit of trouble at the start of the second set, having to fend off three break points in the very first game. But strong a comeback in that game gave her a lot of confidence  as she went on to take control of the set, breaking Rogers in the sixth game and holding on to the lead to force the decider.

By the third set Rybakina was in cruise control. Rogers dind’t hold a single break point while Rybakina broke the American twice to seal the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in just over two hours.

The seventh seed Rybakina had begun the tournament with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Australia’s Storm Sanders and scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16.

Having reached five finals in 2020, Rybakina didn’t feature in a single title clash last year and will be aiming to reach her first final since her runner-up finish in Strasbourg in September 2020.

Doi Saves Match Points, Wins Thriller Against Juvan

World No. 105 Misaki Doi of Japan edged past Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan in a thrilling quarterfinal on Friday reaching her first WTA semifinal since finishing runner-up in Hiroshima in 2019.

Juvan had 19 break points in the match, but Doi saved 16 of them. The Japanese had a much better break point conversion rate, converting three of five in a gruelling two-hour-and-48-minute battle, which ended with an edge-of-the-seat tibreaker.

With one-set all and Doi serving to stay in the contest at 5-6 in the third, Juvan got two match point opportunities, but Doi was able to save both and force the tiebreak. The Japanese took a 6-3 lead in the tiebreak but then lost serve in the next two points allowing the Slovenian to come back. However, the left-handed Doi won the next point with a cross-court winner to win the contest 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) and march into her first WTA 500 semifinal.

The 30-year-old Doi had beaten Slovakia’s Kristina Kucova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round and then defeated Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in the Round of 16.
