This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Halep, Back in Form

Following a season mired with injuries and the consequent loss in form, former World No. 1 Simona Halep finally seems to be back to her former self.

In all fairness, the 30-year-old was showing signs of a comeback in the year-end competitions – seeing that she reached the final in the Transylvania Open and semis in the Linz Open. But now, with no interruptions in sight, we can expect Halep to continue with full throttle.

Halep entered the Melbourne Summer Set 1 with a WTA ranking of #20 and was seeded second. In the opening two rounds, the Romanian seamlessly navigated the fixtures against Destanee Aiava and Elena-Gabriela Ruse, without losing a single set.

In the third round, she ran into some resistance against the Swiss Viktorija Golubic, needing three sets to overcome the challenge. Needing roughly two and a half hours, Halep finally prevailed with 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. That said, her service game wasn’t that strong.

But a win is a win and Halep will is now through to the semis – her third one in as many WTA events on the tour.

Zheng, Bustling with Confidence

19-year-old Qinwen Zhang has made remarkable strides on the WTA Tour since turning pro. In 2019, she was ranked outside the top 600. Now, she is the current World No. 126.

Understandably, she has spent most of her time on the ITF circuit with a few cameos in the big events. And needless to say, the young Chinese has impressed greatly in both situations. Last year, Zheng won three ITF titles, in addition to handing a shock defeat to Liudmila Samsonova in the Palermo Open.

Here in Melbourne, she started as a qualifier to reach the main draw. Then, she moved past the likes of Mai Hontama, Vera Zvonareva, and Ana Konjuh to set up the biggest match of her fresh career. Zheng was particularly impressive against Konjuh as she took the match 7-6(1), 7-6(8) after a terrific display of maturity and skills.

Halep v Zheng Prediction and Tip

On one hand, we have a five-time Grand Slam finalist with an enviable pedigree. On the other, we have a young tennis star who is making significant leaps on the tour. Halep will start as the far obvious favourite but that doesn’t mean it will be a clean sweep for her.

Zheng will put up a good fight and make her adversary work for the win.
