Jordan Thompson v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before on the senior tour, although Thompson did win their Challenger match in Surbiton in 2017.

Wildcard Thompson Starts off with a Win

Australian Thompson has been granted a wildcard into this event, helping to generate local interest in the tournament.

He began his year in Melbourne last week, where he beat compatriot Christopher O’Connell in the first round, before losing to the Finn Emil Ruusuvouri – both those matches went to three sets.

In the first round here in Sydney he was drawn against the American Marcos Giron, ranked currently seven places higher than him in the world.

Thompson began the match badly, broken in the opening game, but he fought back to level and one more break gave him the first set.

And he consolidated his position by breaking Giron early in the second set and then by saving two break back points.

Serving to stay in it, Giron saved one match point, but could not prevent Thompson converting the second.

Opelka Looking for Form in Sydney

Opelka was given a bye in the first round, but he will be looking for an improvement on his performance of last week, where he was beaten in the first round in Melbourne by compatriot Maxime Cressy who then progressed to the final before losing to Rafael Nadal.

That was despite Opelka taking the first set in that match.

In theory, Opelka’s big serving game would appear well suited to the fast outdoor hard courts o Australia. However, he has a poor record at the Australian Open, and has never gone beyond the second round there, the stage that he reached last year.

He will be hoping to find some form in Sydney this week to help him improve on that record next week where he is almost certain to be seeded.

Thompson v Opelka Prediction and Tip

This is likely to be a close match. Opelka is the seed and the higher ranked, but Thompson has home court advantage and the support of the local crowd. An upset cannot be discounted.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
