Rebecca Peterson v Madison Brengle Head to Head

In the two times they have met each other on the tour, the tally is tied at 1-1. Peterson got the last laugh, beating Brengle on her home turf in Rancho Santa Fe Challenger last year in straight sets.

Peterson Stuns Sabalenka

Rebecca Peterson has made a bit of personal history here in Adelaide as she defeated the World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. It was the Swede’s biggest win of her career yet, needing two hours and 20 minutes.

Call it Peterson’s calm, composed play or Sabalenka’s poor rut (she committed 21 double faults in the match) – a win is a win and Peterson has just received a huge confidence boost. And credit where it’s due, the qualifier also converted nine out of a possible 13 break points to keep the tempo up.

The #93-ranked player reached the exact same stage in the Melbourne Set 2 last week but fell to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The question remains if she can make it past this time around. In all fairness, history is certainly on her side.

In the closing moments of the previous season, the 26-year-old Peterson reached the semis in the Astana Open, won the Rancho Santa Fe Challenger (upsetting Brengle en route) and followed it with a semifinal run in the Transylvania Open.

Brengle Survives Potapova

Madison Brengle is also off to a decent start here in Adelaide, defeating the Russian Anastasia Potapova 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, in a little over two hours. The American had a mediocre first-service game, winning just 55% of the points there. She also saved just three out of nine break points while the Russian saved as many as 12.

Nonetheless, Brengle emerged as the winner by a narrow margin and must turn her focus to what lies ahead.

Like Peterson, the 31-year-old also featured in Melbourne last week but lost to Veronika Kudermetova in the second round.

As for her form last season, the current World No. 59 won a trophy on the ITF and Challenger circuit but couldn’t accomplish a great deal on the WTA Tour. Her best results there came at Wimbledon when she made it to the third round, defeating Sofia Kenin on the way.

Brengle v Peterson Prediction and Tip

Brengle has the experience but lacks momentum; Peterson, meanwhile, seems to be in fine form and is likely to believe more in herself now. But whether can she translate that rhythm into a win is a whole different question.

Expect another long match that can swing either way.
