Opelka Shrugs off Melbourne Loss

After having begun the season on a difficult note in Melbourne last week, Opelka seemed to have found his bearings in his opening round encounter in this tournament against the local Jordan Thompson.

Following a three-set defeat at the hands of Maxime Cressy in that opener, Opelka looked to have come back well with a 6-3, 6-2 thrashing of Thompson in the second round in Sydney. This followed a first round bye.

Playing under a closed roof and in a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes, Opelka broke his opponent thrice in the encounter while himself facing – and saving – the only break-point.

10 aces rained down his opponent and Opelka won 22 of his 23 first serve points as he ran away with the match to clinch a quarterfinal berth. Things could slightly more difficult now against a young talent but the confidence from this win should hold Opelka in a good stead.

Nakashima Continues to Win Tie-Breakers

Ranked 366th in the world in 2020, the now-68th-ranked Nakashima has had an interesting start to the season.

After having edged out Jiri Vesely in two tie-breakers in his opening round encounter, Nakashima went on to scrape past Fabio Fognini in another couple of tight tie-breakers as well.

He won 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) to carve out a place for himself in the last eight, with the match lasting a minute under two hours.

In the opening set, Nakashima came back from a break down to force the tie-breaker in which he missed out on two set-points before taking it on the third. The pattern repeated in the second, pushing the set into another tie-breaker but this time it was Fognini who failed to convert three set-points.

Nakashima took advantage of that, winning five straight points to grab the encounter.

Opelka v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Opelka starts off a slight favourite in this one but expect Nakashima to push him hard. Expecting this to go long even if it’s just a two-setter.
