Muguruza Saves Five Set Points

Garbine Muguruza began her 2022 campaign with a straight sets win over Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova on Wednesday.

Playing her first match of the year, the second seed Muguruza dominated the first set, but had to save five set points in the 10th game of the second set before going on to win the match 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in an hour and 28 minutes.

Muguruza, who ended the 2021 season by winning the WTA Finals title, converted all three of the break points she held in the match and saved six of seven to reach the quarterfinals in Sydney for the third time. She lost in the last eight stage in 2015, and withdrew from the quarterfinals in 2018. She also featured in the tournament in 2019, but withdrew from the tournament after winning just one match.

Ranked No. 3 in the world, Muguruza is coming off a terrific 42-17 season, which included three titles from five finals. A two-time grand slam champion, Muguruza was an Australian Open finalist in 2020. She will be hoping to get a few more wins ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam.

Kasatkina Eases Into the Last Eight

Daria Kasatkina reached a second consecutive quarterfinal in 2022 as she defeated World No. 20 Elise Mertens in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

The Russian, ranked No. 26th in the world, had reached the semifinals of Melbourne Summer Set-2 last week. In Sydney, Kastakina started with a 6-4, 6-0 drubbing of Sofia Kenin and then added a second straight sets win on Wednesday.

It was a close first set with both players breaking each other twice in the first seven games. But it was Kastkina who surged ahead with a third break of serve to seal the first set. She took control of the second after getting the only break of the set and held on to the lead for a 6-3, 6-4 win that sent the Belgian packing.

In Melbourne, Kastakina, had beaten Anna Kalinskaya, Madison Keys and Nuria Parrizas-Diaz to reach the last four but was outplayed by Amanda Anisimova in the semifinal.

Kasatkina won two titles and finished runner-up twice in a 38-19 season last year.
