Camila Giorgi v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

The pair have never  played each other before. This will be the first match between the 30-year-old Italian, and the Russian, who is a decade younger.

Giorgi’s First Event of 2022

The current Italian number one, Giorgi enjoyed the biggest victory of her career last year, winning the prestigious Canadian Open in what was her first final for two years, and her first WTA success in three.

She also played for Italy in the Olympics, reaching the last eight.

This will be her tenth year in the main draw at the Australian Open and she has three appearances in the third round to her name.

However, this will be her first match of the year, having chosen not to play in any of the warm-up events.

She last appeared on tour in October, when she got to the semi-final of the Tenerife Open, losing to the Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in straight sets.

Potapova’s Mixed Memories of Melbourne

Potapova, a former junior world number one, who won the girls’ singles at Wimbledon in 2016, will have mixed memories of Melbourne last year.

In the first round she pulled off a shock by beating Alison Riske, the number thirty-one seed, and reached the third round where she met the 23 time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams. She held multiple set points against the American and seemed to have the chance to pull off one of the biggest victories of her career, but nerves got the better of her.

A year older, she will hope she is better able to take advantage if a similar opportunity presents itself this time.

Her warm-up for the tournament has shown signs of  promise. At the Melbourne Summer Set tournament, she reached the quarter-finals before losing to compatriot Veronika Kudermetova, but took the world number 30 to three sets.

She then came through two rounds of qualifying in Adelaide before losing to Madison Brengle, the world number 59, again taking the American to three sets.

Giorgi v Potapova Prediction and Tip

It is a calculated gamble by the Italian not to have played in any of the warm-up events first, and she will be hoping that it does not backfire on her. The Russian, by contrast, is already well into her groove, and could make it difficult for her. Giorgi should expect a battle.
