Berrettini Looking To Better Strong 2021

2021 was a strong season for Italian Matteo Berrettini as he reached a career-high world number seven ranking on the ATP tour.

The year saw him win the Serbia Open on clay and the Queen’s Club on grass.  He reached his first major final at Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic and was also a finalist at the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid.

Berrettini also performed well at other slams making the quarter-finals at the French & US Opens losing out both times to world number one Djokovic.

An injury saw the latter part of his season cut somewhat short and then flared up again at the ATP Tour Finals in Turin, resulting in him pulling out in his opener against Alexander Zverev.

2022 did not get off to the best of starts for the big serving Italian as he only won one of his three singles matches at the ATP Cup. Berrettini was victorious against Ugo Humbert but lost his matches to Alex de Minaur and world number two Daniil Medvedev.

The Italian once again is potentially scheduled to meet Djokovic in the quarters of a slam, this time here in Melbourne and will be looking to get some confidence with convincing victories ahead of week two at the ‘Happy Slam’.

Talented Nakashima Hoping To Impress

20-year-old American Brandom Nakashima was impressive in 2020 and seemed to have picked up from where he left off to start the 2022 season.

Nakashima reached back-t0-back finals at Los Cabos and Atlanta in 2021, and was a semi-finalist at the year end ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan as well last season.

The American started well this week at the ATP 250 in Sydney where he made the quarter-finals.

A good opening win against Jiri Vesely was followed by two tight tie-breaker wins against Italian veteran Fabio Fognini before compatriot Reilly Opelka got the better of him in the final eight.

Nakashima will look to give it his best at the first major of the year as he looks to establish himself on the tour.

Berrettini v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

American Nakashima has evidenced his talent and is a bright prospect in the years to come. However, Berrettini has enough in the toolkit on this surface to proceed untroubled.
