Ashleigh Barty v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

Barty leads Tsurenko 2-1, last upsetting her in the 2020 edition of the Melbourne Slam. The Aussie lost the first set but moved on to win the match 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

Barty Primed for the Home Slam

Seeded number one for the Australian Open 2022, Ashleigh Barty looks all but set to go the distance this time around. In her last three appearances here, the cricketer-turned-tennis pro has reached the quarterfinal at the very least.

The 25-year-old started her season proceedings in Adelaide where she won the title, upsetting Sofia Kenin, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Ryabkina. Barty enjoyed a terrific first-service game, dishing out an incredible 32 aces in the four matches played.

With that kind of red-hot form and a preceding season that saw the Aussie win Wimbledon, Miami Open, and Cincinnati Open, there is little doubt that Barty will succumb early in the competition.

However, she has some fierce opponents to overcome along the way. In her bracket alone, there’s Naomi Osaka and Belinda Bencic meaning she might have to play them as early as the fourth round. After that, the current World No. 1 may potentially run into the likes of Maria Sakkari, Victoria Azarenka, Elina Svitolina, or Kenin en route to the final.

Tsurenko Breezes Through Qualifiers

World No. 120 Lesia Tsurenko had a decent qualifying campaign here in Melbourne as she won all three of her matches in straight sets. Her first victim was Ankita Raina whom she dispatched 6-1, 6-0. The 32-year-old then defeated Asia Muhammad and Elina Avanesyan to reach the main draw.

However, whether she can go further than this is a whole other story. In all of her appearances in the tournament, Tsurenko has reached the third round only once. In fact, in her last eight stints in Melbourne, the Ukrainian has never moved past the opening stages.

Even her season wasn’t off to the best of the starts as she fell in the qualifiers of the Melbourne Summer Set 2. With no form in sight, it is hard to imagine her toppling the mighty Barty.

Barty v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Barty is on a roll with a fabulous service game while Tsurenko is struggling and hasn’t really been the one to win big matches. Expect a straight-set win for the top seed here.
