Maria Sakkari and Tatjana Maria Head to Head

The two players have met just once and it was Tatjana who won that match. That meeting, however, took place in 2014 and the German won it in straight sets.

Sakkari, Hopeful to Build on 2021 Success

Currently ranked World No. 6, Maria Sakkari became a top 10 player last season on the back of some splendid tennis. She reached the semifinal in four major events – French Open, US Open, Miami Open, Kremlin Cup, and WTA Finals.

Although the Greek couldn’t quite win a title, she did come close to it in Ostrava where she reached the final and had to settle for the runner-up silverware. Nonetheless, Sakkari has established herself as one of the most consistent performers on the tour.

So far in 2022, the 26-year-old has featured only in Adelaide where the best she could do was reach round two before losing to Shelby Rogers. Definitely not her finest moment but these are early days in the season and if history has shown us anything, it’s that things are quite uncertain at the beginning.

Nonetheless, Sakkari is the fifth seed here in Melbourne – placed in the same quarter as Ons Jabeur, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, and Belinda Bencic.

Maria, Looking to Make a Comeback

Tatjana Maria is playing in the Australian Open under the protected ranking rule. She is the current World No. 285 – a drop of some 200 odd places in her ranking since January 2020.

The 34-year-old German hasn’t played that much tennis over the last couple of seasons. For instance, Maria was active only from August through to December last year, playing mainly in ITF and Challenger events with a handful of appearances on the WTA Tour. In the season before, which was notably struck by the pandemic, she couldn’t do much about playing then either.

Her recent form entails early-round exits with no reprieve in sight. She too participated in Adelaide International this season where she lost to Stefanie Voegele in the qualifiers.

Sakkari v Maria Prediction and Tip

Maria Sakkari is likely to win this one in straight sets. Even though Tatjana is experienced, she lacks the momentum and more importantly, hasn’t won her first-round match in Melbourne in her last three attempts.
