Barbora Krejcikova is off to a brilliant start in 2022. She played in Sydney last week where she reached the final after upsetting Anett Kontaveit en route. The Czech ultimately fell to Paula Badosa although, she couldn’t have asked for a better tune-up for the Australian Open.
The 26-year-old is the current World No. 4 – a feat she achieved last season after starting the year outside the top 60. Krejcikova won three singles finals on the tour, including the French Open and Prague Open. In the doubles department, she won the Olympic Gold, WTA Finals, and Roland Garros (among other titles) with Katerina Siniakova.
Having secured a top-five ranking in both fields, Krejcikova is quickly establishing herself as one of the best on the tour.
However, she will be tested in Melbourne over the week. The number four seed has never made it past the second round in the singles draw here so there is a bit of history to look forward to.

Petkovic, Relying on Experience
In her last seven appearances in the Australian Open, Andrea Petkovic has never made it past the second round. By the looks of it, it’s going to be the same story for her once again this season.
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to make that the German is well past her prime although, she did enjoy a brief revival last season. The 34-year-old was the runner-up at the Hamburg Open – her first singles final since February 2015. In the following month, Petkovic also won the Cluj-Napoca Open.
These tournaments, however, featured the lesser-ranked players in the WTA Tour. The current world number 72 will clearly need a whole lot more to overcome a player of Krejcikova’s calibre.
The same is also evident from the fact that Petkovic wasn’t particularly impressive in the big events last season. As for her form of late, she played in Melbourne Summer Set 1 where she fell in the quarterfinal to Naomi Osaka.

Expect Krejcikova to win this one; she has the form and momentum needed for a good run. Petkovic, on her part, can put up a good resistance and give her opponent a run for her money.
