Roberto Bautista Agut v Stefano Travaglia Head to Head

Bautista Agut beat Travaglia in their only meeting in Mallorca last year.

Bautista Agut Looking to Overcome Last Year’s Setback

World No. 17 Roberto Bautista Agut has got off to a great start in 2022. The Spaniard was 4-1 at the ATP Cup, leading Spain to the final of the tournament. But a defeat in his singles rubber in the final to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime dashed Spain’s hopes of winning a maiden ATP Cup title.

While he would be devastated by the loss to Auger-Aliassime, Bautista Agut will be happy with his four wins in the tournament, all of which came against some top names. The Spaniard breezed past Cristain Garin, Casper Ruud and Dusan Lajovic in straight sets but needed three sets to edge past Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling semifinal rubber.

The 33-year-old, who will be making his 10th Australian Open appearance, was a quarterfinalist in 2019. Over the last two years, he bowed out of the third round in 2020 and was stunned by Radu Albot in the first round last year. He immediately hit form though, finishing runners-up in Montpellier and Doha and reaching the semifinals in Miami. He ended the season poorly, finishing with a 29-25 record.

A nine-time winner from 18 tour-level finals, Bautista Agut will be hoping to overcome his last year’s setback and start off with a win on Tuesday and set up a second round match against Philipp Kohlschreiber or Marco Cecchinato.

Travaglia Off to a Poor Start

It’s not been a greet start to the season for the World No. 84 Stefano Travaglia. The Italian lost in the first round in Melbourne to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin and then qualified for the main draw in Sydney as lucky loser, only to lose in the first round to Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović.

Travaglia doesn’t have an encouraging record in the Grand Slams, having reached the third round just once at Roland Garros in 2020. At the Australian Open, this will be the 30-year-old’s fourth appearance. He reached the second round on his main draw debut in 2019, but made first round exits in 2020 and 2021.

Travaglia hasn’t had much success on the tour, but he made an impressive start last year, reaching a maiden final in Melbourne-1 before finishing runner-up to Jannik Sinner.

The Italian, who prefers playing on clay courts, didn’t end the season well, finishing with an 11-20 record. He impressed at the Challenger level though, winning a title on clay in Romania.
