Sinner In Top Form

With four titles and a runner-up finish in his maiden ATP 1000 final in Miami, Jannik Sinner enjoyed an extremely successful 2021 season. The Italian also broke into the top 10, peaking to No. 9, thus becoming the first male born in the 2000s to break into the top 10.

Currently ranked No. 11 in the world, the 20-year-old is 3-0 in 2022 and looks all set to make an impression at the Australian Open. In his past two appearances at the Melbourne major, Sinner reached the second round in 2020, but was dispatches by Denis Shapovalov in the first round last year.

Representing Italy at the ATP Cup, Sinner won his singles matches against Australia’s Max Purcell, France’s Arthur Rinderknech and Russia’s Roman Safiullin but those weren’t enough to take Italy past the group stages.

Sinner is yet to lose a set this year. Last year, his 49-22 campaign included title successes in Melbourne-1, Washington, Sofia and Antwerp. He also reached the final of the Miami Masters but lost to Hubert Hurkacz.

In his young career, Sinner has already featured in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, reaching that stage at the French Open two years ago. He will look to match or better that feat in Melbourne this year.

Sousa Makes It As Lucky Loser

Joao Sousa found his way into the main draw as a lucky loser.

The Portuguese, who won his first qualifying round against France’s Manuel Guinard, and his second qualifying round against Australia’s Marc Polmans, fell in straight sets to Moldova’s Radu Albot in the final qualifying round. However, he still made the draw as a lucky loser.

In his eight appearances at the Australian Open so far, the 32-year-old has reached the third round thrice but has never gone beyond that stage.

Currently ranked No. 140 in the world, Sousa had a terrible time last year, finishing with a 2-14 record in the main draws.

Sousa is a three-time champion and seven-time runner-up of the tour, but it would be a huge challenge for him to beat an opponent of Sinner’s calibre in the first round.

Sinner v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Sinner has been in top form and he won’t face much trouble in dispatching his opponent. Expect a straight-forward win for the Italian in this contest.
