Petra Kvitova v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

Petra Kvitova leads Sorana Cirstea 5-3 in their head-to-head. Incidentally, their last meeting came at the Australian Open last season where the Romanian stunned Kvitova in three sets.

Mixed Start To The Year For Kvitova

Petra Kvitova is a two-time Grand Slam champion, but projecting the Czech to reach the latter stages is an assessment that doesn’t necessarily prove to be accurate especially at the Australian Open.

And in Kvitova’s case, she can be a tad difficult to predict at times. The Czech is one of the most renowned shotmakers in the women’s tour and has the ability to turn the tide amid the poor start to the year.

However, she started the season with a shocking defeat suffered at the hands of World No. 221 Priscilla Hon at the Adelaide International. The Australian wild card had never before in her career beaten a player ranked higher than 41. And the manner in which Kvitova let the match slip out of her grasp was even more dumbfounding.

Things were back to normal albeit momentarily at the Sydney International when she posted her first win of the calendar against Arantxa Rus. The win itself wasn’t pretty, and Kvitova was found wanting in her next test against Ons Jabeur.

That match against the Tunisian trailblazer should have been the barometer to gauge her intensity and competitive levels. But her serve faltered badly and played second fiddle in the match, losing 6-4 6-4.

Cirstea Seeks Another Scalp Over Kvitova

Sorana Cirstea defeated Petra Kvitova in the second round of the Australian Open last season and will look to draw upon the game plan that worked perfectly to keep the Czech in check.

Back then Cirstea was yet to return to her glorious embryonic years. But that win sparked her into life despite exiting the tournament in the third round against another Czech in Marketa Vondrousova.

The Romanian won her first WTA title in over 10 years just a couple of months after upstaging Kvitova, at the Istanbul Open and would reach the second final in Strasbourg, falling to Barbora Krejcikova.

Cirstea’s European swing would get even better when she advanced into the second week of the French Open for the first time since 2009. That upturn in form coincided with a surge in ranking.

Cirstea finished 2021 with a Top 50 year-end ranking.

Kvitova v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Kvitova’s game appears to be completely ragged despite this being so early in the season. Cirstea herself has not set the world alight. Expect this match to go the distance.
