Kohlschreiber has a 3-2 lead against the Spaniard. They haven’t met over the past three years, but the German won both their last two encounters in 2018.

Bautista Agut Holds Off Travaglia

He was stunned in the first round of the tournament last year, but world No. 17 Roberto Bautista Agut safely moved into the second round this year with a four-set win over Italy’s Stefano Travaglia on Tuesday.

The Italian didn’t make things easy for the 15th seed, breaking back twice in the first set to force the tiebreak. The Spaniard dominated the tiebreak though, going a set up and then raced to a 4-0 lead in the second before Travaglia tried another comeback, but could break just once in the set to fall behind by two-sets-to-love.

The Italian had his moment in the third, getting the sole break in the last game of the set to stay in the match, but Bautista Agut was quick enough to regroup. He dominated the fourth set with three breaks of serve and close out the two-hour-and-55-minute contest 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

The Spaniard struck 18 winners compared to his opponent’s 47, but also made just 43 unforced errors against the Italian’s 75.

A quarterfinalist at the 2019 Australian Open, Bautista Agut will next take on a player who leads the head to head rivalry against him but has played just one match this year. The Spaniard meanwhile notched his fifth win of the season on Tuesday. Bautista Agut had a 4-1 record at the ATP Cup, leading Spain to the final of the tournament with four wins from his four singles matches. But he couldn’t help Spain to the title after he lost his singles rubber in the final to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Kohlschreiber Eases Past Cecchinato

Making his 16th main draw appearance at the Australian Open, Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber advanced to the second round a 14th time with a straight sets win over Italy’s Marco Cecchinato.

Ranked 134th in the world, the German struck 10 aces, won 89% first-serve points and hit 33 winners to knock out the World No. 95, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) in two hours and eight minutes.

Playing for the first time this season, the 38-year-old Kohlschreiber broke the Italian once each in the first two sets. He wasn’t broken in the entire match but had to save a set point in the third set and then took complete control of the tiebreak, winning it without dropping a point.

An eight-time champion on the tour, Kohlschreiber was 7-9 last year, reaching the third round of the French Open and the quarterfinals in Halle.

Bautista Agut v Kohlschreiber Prediction and Tip

Kohlschreiber leads the rivalry 3-2 but Bautista Agut will be the favourite despite that record. The Spaniard is in top form and should advance to the next round without much trouble.
