Coming into the tournament with back-to-back semifinal appearances to kickstart 2022, Marin Cilic looked in good touch as he began his Australian Open challenge with a straight sets win over Ecuadorian qualifier Emilio Gomez.

Broken in the fifth game of the first set, Cilic was quick to respond with a break and then took charge of the match, cruising to a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 win in an hour and 40 minutes.

The Croatian struck 17 aces and won 85% of his first-serve points. He also struck 39 winners, made 28 unforced errors and converted 7 of 11 break points.

Ranked No. 27 in the world, the 27th seed Cilic improved his 2022 record to 5-2 with the victory on Tuesday. The 2018 Australian Open runner-up, who was beaten in the first round by Grigor Dimitrov last year, is on course for a third round meeting with the fifth seed Andrey Rublev.

The 2014 U.S. Open champion was 33-23 last year. He began the new season with the two Adelaide events reach the last four of both, but falling to Karen Khachanov and Thanasi Kokkinakis respectively.

Gombos Picks His Maiden Aus Open Win

After battling past all three of his qualifying opponents, Slovakia’s Nobert Gombos kept up the good work in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday, winning his first main draw match in the tournament in what is his third attempt.

Knocked out of the opening round in the last two editions, Gombos earned a hard-fought win against fellow qualifier Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan. The 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory in two hours and 53 minutes was the 31-year-old’s first main draw win of the season.

Gombos converted 5 of 16 break points and saved six of nine in the match. He struck 42 winners against his opponent’s six but also made 64 unforced errors to Skatov’s 39.

Ranked 117th in the world, Gombos had qualified for the main draw by beating Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov, Argentina’s Renzo Olivo and Australia’s Matthew Ebden in the three qualifying rounds respectively.
