Matteo Berrettini v Gael Monfils Head to Head

Berrettini has won both their previous meetings, winning a five-setter at the U.S. Open in 2019 and in straight sets at the ATP Cup last year.

Following an epic four-hour-and-10-minute victory over Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz on Friday, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini needed just two hours and 22 minutes to dispatch another Spaniard, Pablo Carreno Busta, on Sunday to reach a maiden quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

The Italian, ranked No. 7 in the world, has bettered his fourth round finish of last year, when he couldn’t take the court for his Round of 16 match against Stefanos Tsitsipas after injuring himself during the third-round win over Karen Khachanov.

There was no such issue this year as the Italian fired 28 aces against the Spaniard for 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory. After both players held their serves in the first 10 games, Berrettini broke in the 11th game of the first set and then saved a break point in the next game to wrap up the set in 43 minutes.

Carreno Busta put up a gutsy show in the next set, coming back to hold his serve in the first game after falling behind 0-40. He saved another break point in the ninth game to keep the set on serve. But despite a solid showing in the set, the Spaniard couldn’t match-up to Berrettini in the tiebreak as the Italian sealed it to take a two-sets-to-love lead.

The seventh seed was on top in the third as well. He couldn’t convert a break point in the sixth game , but did convert a second breaking chance in the tenth game to reach the last eight. A quarterfinalist at the French Open last year, Barrettini was the runner-up in Wimbledon and a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open last year. So this is his fourth consecutive last eight appearance at a Grand Slam.

Another interesting fact about the 25-year-old Italian: All his defeats at the majors last year came against Novak Djokovic, which means the Italian now has a 20-0 record against players other than Djokovic at Grand Slams. With the Serb not featuring in this year’s event, the Italian will be sensing an opportunity to win a maiden Grand Slam. And he has got better with every match at the Australian Open.

Sunday’s win was Berrettini’s first three-set win in Melbourne this year. The Italian defeated the United States’ Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the first round and followed that with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over the United States’ Stefan Kozlov in the Round of 64.

Alcaraz presented him his toughest test. The Spaniard wiped off a two-set deficit to force the decider but eventually lost the edge-of-the-seat battle to the Italian 2-6, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5-10).

Berrettini has served well in the tournament, and has fired a total of 80 aces in the first four rounds. He will be looking to reach a third major semifinal on Tuesday.

Monfils Into the Quarters for the Second Time

Gael Monfils has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the second time in his career. The Frenchman has been in terrific form this year, having started the season by winning the Adelaide-1 title. He has now reached the last eight of the Melbourne major without dropping a set.

On Sunday, the 17th seed knocked out Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanović 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in a two-hour-and-35-minute contest. Winning 81% first-serve points, the Frenchman fired 17 aces and struck 54 winners in the match. He also converted four of 11 break points and saved five of six in the match.

Monfils was extremely dominant in the first two rounds, defeating Argentina’s Federico Coria 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-0, 6-4.

He dropped a service game for the first time in the third round, as he was broken thrice by Cristain Garin, yet he defeated the Chilean 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, 6-3.

A two-time major semifinalist, Monfils made his only quarterfinal appearance in Melbourne in 2016. He hasn’t reached the last eight stage of Grand Slam since reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in 2019.
