Danielle Collins v Alize Cornet Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Cornet Carves Halep Upset

Alize Cornet fought her way into the quarterfinal of the Australian Open 2022 after battling the former World No. 1 Simona Halep under the scorching heat for two and a half hours.

The #61 ranked player took the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 amidst testing conditions in Melbourne. Halep was seen struggling a bit and Cornet was quick to capitalise on it.

This marks the second top 10 player that Cornet has taken out in the competition. In the second round, the Frenchwoman defeated the reigning WTA Finals champion Garbine Muguruza with 6-3, 6-3. Her other wins so far have come over the likes of Viktoriya Tomova and Tamara Zidansek.

Cornet turned 32 just last weekend and has been playing in Grand Slams since 2006. In the entirety of her last 16 seasons, she had never made it this far in a major. Overwhelmed with emotions and a career-defining run, Cornet will now look to keep the Australian dream alive and reach the semis.

This fabulous run also comes at a time when Cornet had a disastrous start to 2022, losing in the early rounds of Melbourne 1 and Adelaide 2. She hasn’t won a title since July 2018 and her most recent WTA final on the tour came in Chicago last season.

Collins Retracing her Steps to Glory

In 2019, Danielle Collins took the WTA Tour by surprise by reaching the semifinal of the Australian Open. That run put her on the map and propelled her into the top 30.

Three years later, the American looks primed to repeat the feat again. Collins knocked out Elise Mertens in the fourth round with 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in a little under three hours. That marathon match saw the 28-year-old commit as many as 41 unforced errors but she made up for it with a higher winners count and winning the crucial points.

Before the game with Mertens, Collins knocked out the Danish teen prodigy Clara Tauson in a similar three-setter. In the opening rounds, however, the current World No. 30 didn’t face that many difficulties as she moved past Ana Konjuh and Caroline Dolehide with ease.

Collins enjoyed a good run last season by bagging two singles titles – Palermo and San Jose. The number 27 seed also reached the semifinal in Linz and Phillip Island Trophy and was fairly consistent throughout the year.

Collins v Cornet Prediction and Tip

On the whole, Collins is in a much superior form than Cornet and she will start as the odds-on favourite. However, Cornet is well-experienced and is on a red hot streak right now. Her past form does not account for much at this stage, especially when she is bolstered by her recent success.

Cornet is available at a good price and if you like backing the underdogs, now would be a good time.

Tip: Cornet to win and Over 19.5 games in the match: 13/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
