Baez Looking To Start Well

World No. 88 Sebastian Baez is coming off a terrific 2021 season. The Argentine clay-court specialist featured in as many as nine Challenger finals, and became the youngest player in ATP Challenger Tour history to win six titles at this level in a season. He also claimed the most number of wins (44) in a single year among players aged 20 and under.

He began 2021 beyond top 300 in the rankings, but broke into the top 100 by the end of the season.

This year, Baez has had a decent start, reaching the second round of the Australian Open on his Grand Slam debut. The 21-year-old knocked out Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in a five-set first round contest and then took a set of semifinalist Stefanos Tsitsipas before bowing out of the tournament.

In the tune-up to the opening major, Baez lost in the first round in Melbourne after making the main draw as lucky loser and then qualified for the main draw in Sydney International, where he won his first round contest against Christopher O’Connell.

This will be Baez’s first appearance in Cordoba.

Verdasco to Play His First Tour-Level Match in 2022

The vastly experienced Fernando Verdasco will play in Cordoba for just the second time in his career. He doesn’t have happy memories from his previous appearance, as he went down to Carlos Taberner in the opening round in 2020.

The 38-year-old left-hander has featured in two Challenger tournaments this year. He lost in the Round of 16 in Blumenau and fell in the quarterfinals in Santa Cruz.

Ranked No. 170th in the world, the Spaniard has won seven titles in his career. He has been more effective on clay than on other surfaces, and a 232 – 152 record and five titles are a testament of that.

Verdasco had a dismal run last year, finishing with a 2-8 record, delivering his only significant result in Belgrade, where he reached the quarterfinals. He had a disappointing run at the Challenger level as well, making just one semifinal in Tenerife.

The former No. 7 may struggle to find a way past his younger opponent on Monday.

Baez v Verdasco Prediction and Tip
