Delbonis on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Fifth seed Federico Delbonis will be playing in the main draw in Cordoba for the fourth time. The Argentine was a semifinalist on his debut in 2019, but exited the tournament in the first and second rounds respectively over the next two years.

The 31-year-old, who prefers playing on clay courts, has a 127-98 record on the surface, which also includes two titles won in Sao Paulo (2014) and Marrakech (2016) besides two runner-up finishes.

Delbonis comes into the tournament on a three-match losing streak. He began the 2022 season by winning his first two singles matches at the ATP Cup against lower ranked payers, but fell to Kamil Majchrzak in his last singles match of the tournament.

He next featured at the Sydney International, falling to Denis Kudla in the first round, and then went down fighting against Spain’s Pedro Martínez in the first round of the Australian Open.

He finished with a 23-24 record last year, which included a run to the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters and the Round of 16 at the French Open besides three other semifinal finishes. But he ended the season with 10 consecutive losses, most of them coming on hard court—a surface on which he has struggled throughout his career.

Back on clay, Delbonis would be ready for another impressive showing this year.

Taberner Is 0-1 in 2022

Knocked out by Dominik Koepfer in the first round of the Australian Open, World No. 108 Carlos Taberner will be featuring in his second tournament of the season.

This is the second time he will be playing in Cordoba. In his first appearance in 2020, Taberner won both his qualifying rounds before upsetting Fernando Verdasco in the first round. He eventually lost in the Round of 16 to Andrej Martin.

A solid clay court player, the Spaniard won three Challenger titles last year, all on his preferred surface.

Taberner, 24, was 6-6 on the tour last year, with his best performance coming in Nur Sultan, where he was a quarterfinalist. He broke into the top 100 for the first time last year, peaking to a career-high ranking of 93, before falling out of the top 100 again.
