Pedro Martinez v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24 year old Spaniard, and the Brazilian, who is three years older.

Kitzbuhel Finalist Martinez Looking to Get Going

Martinez reached the first senior final of his career last year in Kitzbuhel, Austria, eventually losing to the Norwegian Casper Ruud.

Prior to that, he was better known for his exploits on clay in Challenger events in his home country, appearing in four finals in Spain in two years, although only wining one of them.

However, he improved on that record in Seville last September, beating compatriot Roberto Carballes-Baena in the final on that occasion.

Like his opponent, he began his season in Australia, reaching the second round in Sydney before losing to Dan Evans of Great Britain.

He did win his first round match in Melbourne, defeating the Argentine Federico Delbonis, before he lost to another South American, Cristian Garin of Chile in the second round. He had his chances though, and will regret the fact that he was twice a set up before finally losing.

Brazilian Number One Monteiro

Monteiro is the current Brazilian number one and was chosen by them to play for the national team at the Olympics, some nine months after achieving his best ever result at a Grand Slam, reaching the third round of the French Open in Paris in 2020.

However, his greatest successes have been achieved on the Challenger Tour, where he has appeared in eleven finals, all of them on clay, winning six of them.

Monteiro enjoyed a hot streak at the end of 2021, winning a  tournament in Braga, Portugal and then going on to lose in finals in Brazil and Argentina.

He began his year in Australia, qualifying for the second event in Adelaide, and then reaching the third round before losing to the Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

It was another Frenchman, Benoît Paire, who ended his interest in the Australian Open at the first round stage, but he did not go down without a fight, and twice levelled the match having been a set down, only to lose in the fifth.

Martinez v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

This might be a close match, but Martinez may just have the edge based on seeding and world ranking.
