Kovalik Still Searching for First Win of 2022

The Slovakian has not had the best start to his 2022 campaign, falling in qualifying on both attempts to make the main draw. Kovalik kicked off his year in Melbourne (Summer Set) where he drew Laaksonen, losing out to the Swiss 6-4 6-2 in 1-hour and 8-minutes.

In an attempt to make the main draw of the Australian Open, Kovalik took on Ymer in Q1, however, this also ended in defeat, falling to his Swedish opponent 7-6(3) 6-2. Including some 2021 results, Kovalik is currently on a 4-match losing streak. Therefore, he will be desperate to get a win on the board in Pune against Bhambri.

Currently ranked 151st in the ATP rankings, the highlight of Kovalik’s 2021 season came on the clay of  Kitzbuhel. Kovalik made his way through qualifying without dropping a set, seeing off Riedi and Vilella to make the main draw. The 29-year-old backed up his qualifying wins with victories over Munar and Vesely. Eventually, Kovalik lost out in the quarter-final to Martinez 6-2 6-2.

Kovalik will know he has a chance to get his first win of the season against Bhambri. A win against Bhambri will set up a tie with either wildcard Ramanathan or Trivaglia.

Bhambri First Main Draw Match for Nearly a Year

Last year, Bhambri made his return to the tour after not playing since 2018. Throughout 2021, the Indian only played 4 matches with a W/L record of 2-2. Bhambri did not record a main draw win but did successfully navigate his way through Dubai qualifying. The 29-year-old defeated Gunneswaran and Ramanathan to reach the main draw, before losing to Bedene in 3-sets 3-6 6-1 6-4.

In 2022, participating in Pune is Bhambri’s second event of the year. The Indian attempted to make the main draw of the Australian Open. In Q1, Bhambri secured a 6-4 6-2 win over Domingues to reach Q2. This is where his progress ended, falling to Machac 6-1 6-3.

Bhambri’s ability is much better than his current ranking of 1049, and will likely partake in a tough battle against Kovalik. A win against his Slovakian opponent would be his first main draw win since 2018, and what better place to do it than in his home country.

Kovalik v Bhambri Prediction and Tip

This will likely be a close encounter, however, despite Bhambri’s current PR ranking, he is the favourite to progress to the next round.
