Jiri Vesely v Emil Ruusuvouri Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in Antalya, Turkey, last January, Ruusuvouri winning in straight sets.

Vesely Looking to Defend His Title

Vesely is the defending champion in Pune, by virtue of the fact that the event was not played in 2021 due to Covid.

Two years ago, he took advantage of a weakened field to beat Egor Gerasimov of Belarus in the final, for what remains his only senior success on the ATP tour.

This time, given a first round bye courtesy of his seeding, he began his latest campaign on Thursday with a match against Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain, the world number 126.

In the first set, the Czech was dominant on serve, whilst the Spaniard’s serve came under pressure throughout. He had already saved four break points before he was finally broken.  Another dropped serve gave the Czech the set.

At the start of the second set, Vesely had to save two break points in his opening service game, but, having done so, he was the first to make a breakthrough when the Spaniard dropped his serve.

He then faltered when serving for the match allowing the Spaniard to break back. But Zapate Miralles’ reprieve was only temporary as he was broken again next game and the match was over.

Ruusuvouri Hoping to Maintain Bright Start to 2022

Ruusuvouri has already had some success in 2022, reaching the semi-finals of the Melbourne  Summer Set before narrowly losing to the man who would go on to win not only that event but the Australian Open as well, Rafael Nadal.

He then allowed a lead to slip in his first round match at the Australian Open against Felix Augur-Aliassime, before travelling to India.

His first round match against Gerasimov, the 2020 finalist, was a mixed bag. He breezed through the first set without dropping a game, but only won the second after a marathon tie-break of 24 points.

His second round match against another Czech player, the qualifier Vit Kopriva, was less complicated in term of score, although that does not tell the whole story of the match.

In the first set, the Finn raced into a four love lead, only to allow the Czech back into the match by dropping his serve twice.

However, when Kopriva dropped his own serve for a third time, Ruusuvouri claimed the advantage with his fourth set point.

The second set was less dramatic and was largely dominated by serve, with Vesely securing a break midway through it,  And then, with Kopriva serving to stay in the match, he was broken once more.

Vesely v Ruusuvouri Prediction and Tip

Although Vesely is the defending champion and is the higher ranked of the pair, Ruusuvouri did win their only previous encounter and seems to be in the better form of the pair. That makes him favourite for this match.
