Maria Sakkari v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

Sakkari holds a formidable 3-1 lead over Alexandrova. Their last meeting was in the Kremlin Cup last season where Sakkari withdrew in the first set, giving the Russian a walkover into the final.

Sakkari Off to a Good Start

Number one seed Maria Sakkari overcame Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-4 in the first round in an hour and 40 minutes. She won 67% of the points on the first serve, saved 12 out of 14 breakpoints, and won an impressive seven games in a row.

The Greek is one of the top favourites to go the distance in St. Petersburg and end a title drought that has plagued her for almost three years. Her last trophy came in the 2019 WTA Rabat. However, that hasn’t stopped the 26-year-old from breaking into the top 10 to be ranked as the current World No. 7.

So far this year, her highlights include reaching the fourth-round in the Australian Open and a second-round exit in Adelaide. Last season, Sakkari was a runner-up in the Ostrava Open, in addition to reaching the semifinal in two majors, Miami Open, and the year-end WTA Finals.

She has been largely consistent across the board and has done well to establish herself as one of the elites on the tour.

Alexandrova Survives Giorgi

Ekaterina Alexandrova also needed a little under two hours to navigate her opening-round fixture against Camila Giorgi. The local favourite took the match 2-6, 6-1, 2-6 with a slightly superior first-service game than Sakkari.

She is the only Russian left in the field now and her chances of making it further are slim.

Her tally for the season so far stands at 2-3; she lost in the first round in Adelaide and Melbourne Slam while in Sydney, she succumbed to Garbine Muguruza in the second round.

The #43-ranked Alexandrova has never been among the players who consistently make it to the penultimate rounds on the circuit. Last year, she reached the quarterfinal on a handful of occasions along with settling for the runner-up trophy in the Kremlin Cup. That said, it was also the season where she defeat more top 10 players than all of her previous years combined.

The 27-year-old defeated Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Ons Jabeur, and Aryna Sabalenka. Of course, the precedent is set for her against Sakkari but it will not be an easy match.

Sakkari v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

Sakkari should win this one and reach the quarterfinals. However, she is likely to be tested by Alexandrova and will need to ensure that she doesn’t commit far too many unforced errors under the fast conditions of the indoor courts in St. Petersburg.
