Giron played fellow Tokyo American Olympian Tennys Sandgren, the world number 163 in the first round.
Sandgren was under pressure on serve throughout the first set, and, although he saved several break points against him, he eventually dropped his serve. He did have three chances to break back when Giron was serving for the set, but could not take any of them.
Again Sandgren had to save break points at the start of the second set, and it was no surprise when he was broken again. This time he responded with a break of his own but, before he had time to consolidate that, he immediately dropped his serve again.
The match was as good as over, and Giron was able to serve out.

Broady Eases Past Gojowczyk
Liam Broady , world 121, came through two rounds of qualifying to make the main draw in Dallas, beating first Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, and then Thomas Fabbiano of Italy.
That earned him a first round tie with the German Peter Gojowczyk, the world number 97.
Broady dominated the first set, strong on serve and always threatening the German’s. He broke Gojowczyk once, and then again, and the set was his for the loss of just one game.
The second was closer, although the German did have to save a break point. But then he dropped his serve once more, and Broady was able to serve out to love.

Giron with home court advantage, should prove too strong for the qualifier, who is relatively inexperienced at this level.
