Petra Kvitova v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

Kvitova has been nothing short of domineering in all of her previous encounters with Begu. She now leads 5-0 with her last win coming in the US Open 2020.

Kvitova Starts Strong

After losing three matches at the start of the season, Petra Kvitova finally looks settled enough to deliver a good run.

Here in St. Petersburg – a competition where she has a good track record (winner in 2018, quarterfinal in 2019 and 2020) – the number six seed started with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jule Niemeier. Kvitova looked comfortable throughout the match as she won 78% of the points behind the first serve, doled out eight aces, and won nine games in a row.

It was one of those classic, clinical performances from the Czech on the back of which she reached three Grand Slam finals over her career. But following an uneventful showing last season, at least by her standards, she dropped out of the top 10 and is now the World No. 23.

She arrived in Russia following first-round exits in the Australian Open and Adelaide 1, and a second-round loss in Sydney. But now, it seems like she has found her momentum and will look forward to retaining it.

Begu Routs Zhang

Irina-Camelia Begu also had a good start in the tournament as she defeated Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 15 minutes. She too had a terrific first-service game with a 79% win rate and saved four out of five breakpoints.

Statistically, she has had a much better run in 2022 when compared to Kvitova. The 31-year-old Romanian reached the quarterfinal Melbourne Set 2 and the second round in the January major.

On the whole, however, pedigree is not half as impressive as her opponent’s. Most of her previous season is dotted with early-round exits, barring a few exceptions. Begu was a runner-up in the Cleveland Open – her first WTA singles final since July 2017. She ultimately lost to Anett Kontaveit in the final.

Kvitova v Begu Prediction and Tip

Kvitova will start as the heavy favourite and should reach the quarterfinal comfortably. Begu hasn’t beaten a regular top 10 player since 2016 and with Kvitova firing on all cylinders, it will be a tall order for her to deliver that result now.

Tip: Kvitova to win: 4/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
