Maria Sakkari v Elise Mertens Head to Head

The two ladies have quite a bit of rivalry going on between them with the tally tied at 4-4. Sakkari has won two of their last three meetings, with the most recent one coming in the 2021 French Open in three sets.

Business as Usual for Sakkari

Maria Sakkari has had a clinical start to her campaign in the St. Petersburg Open. She has so far defeated the local favourites like Anastasia Potapova and Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets to reach the quarters.

The Greek never appeared to be in any real trouble throughout these matches; against Alexandrova, she won the match 6-2, 6-4 with a first-service win rate of 79% and five consecutive game wins.

Seeded number one for the tournament, she looks fairly imposing to go the distance. The World No. 7 has had a decent start to the season – a second-round exit in Adelaide followed by a fourth-round defeat to Jessica Pegula in the Australian Open.

Last year, the 26-year-old was a runner-up in Ostrava Open – in addition to reaching the semis in two majors. Sakkari had a career-best season and ended up getting a solid foundation for the coming year.

Mertens Survives Martic

First, a three-setter against Alize Cornet and then, another similar affair with Petra Martic – the tournament so far has been demanding for Elise Mertens.

The Belgian had to battle for a little over two hours to overcome Martic with 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 – clearly not among her best performances but she did manage to get the job done. However, if Mertens wants to go any further, she will need to up her game greatly.

Of course, the fact that she has been able to test Sakkari at times in the past serves as good news for her. However, Mertens’ recent singles pedigree isn’t as impressive as her opponent’s and as a result, she will start as the underdog.

So far in 2022, she has lost to Danielle Collins and Daria Kasatkian in the mid-rounds in Melbourne and Sydney. Last year she won the Gippsland Trophy and was a runner-up in Istanbul, thus marking her two best runs on the singles circuit.

As a doubles player,  however, the 26-year-old achieved a lot more and has established herself at the apex of the discipline.

Sakkari v Mertens Prediction and Tip

While this match may go to three sets – as has been the case so often in the past – Sakkari should ultimately come out as the winner. She has had a much better service game in St. Petersburg and combined with her overall form, she will start as the heavy favourite.

Tip: Sakkari to win: 1/3 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
