Ruud Powers Past Coria

World No. 8 Casper Ruud extended his unbeaten streak in Buenos Aires to seven matches as the 2020 champion knocked out local hope Federico Coria in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The 23-year-old saved all five break points that he faced in the match, while he broke his opponent once in each set to win the quarterfinal 6-3, 6-4. Ruud had also scored a straight sets win in the opening round, defeating Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

The one-hour-and-33-minute victory over Coria improved Ruud to 4-1 in 2022. He had a 2-1 record at the ATP Cup and then missed the Australian Open.

This is just the second time the Norwegian is featuring in the main draw of the Argentina Open. In 2020, he went all the way to the title by beating Pedro Sousa in the final.

A six-time champion and two-time finalist on the tour, Ruud won all five of the finals he featured in last year. He will be looking to reach a ninth career final on Saturday.

Delbonis Ousts Fognini

Federico Delbonis continued his solid run at home as he ousted fourth seed Fabio Fognini in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The World No. 42 broke Fognini in the very first game of the match and then saved three break points in the sixth game, before closing out the set without conceding a service game.

Delbonis began the second set with a break as well, but the Italian broke him to love in the sixth game only to see the Argentine break back in the next game. Delbonis held on to the lead to wrap up the one-hour-and-36-minute contest 6-4, 6-4.

A two-time champion on the tour, the Argentine has reached the semifinals in Buenos Aires for just the second time in his career. He lost to Aljaz Bedene in the final four stage in 2018.

The 31-year-old is yet to drop a set this week. He began the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Juan Martín del Potro in the opening round and then defeated Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-4in the second round on Thursday.

On Saturday, the clay court specialist will be competing in a tour-level semifinal for the first time since Hamburg in July last year.

Ruud v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

While Delbonis has displayed good form, it’s the top seed who will be the favourite to advance. Expect Ruud to face some resistance but eventually the Norwegian should go through to the final.
